In case anyone is looking for some extra anti-smoking ammunition, here are a few fresh factoids from a major American Lung Association report on the economic effects of smoking:
Massachusetts does cover the costs of smoking cessation programs for people on Medicaid. But it does not mandate that private insurers cover the costs of cessation programs, nor does it cover the programs for state employees.
One of the first actions of recent Massachusetts resident Donald Berwick when he took the federal reins of Medicare and Medicaid this summer was to announce that Medicare would cover quit-smoking services for all smokers, not just those with smoking-related diseases. (Our post on that here.)
